New Year’s Eve fireworks
Espetáculo de Fim de Ano
- When
- 31 December
- Where
- Funchal bay, Funchal and Porto Santo
- Time
- Midnight
- Price
- Free
At midnight on 31 December fireworks go up from 58 firing points around the hillsides of Funchal and in Porto Santo. The show lasts about eight minutes and turns the whole amphitheatre of the city into one stage.
Funchal’s New Year fireworks are famous well beyond the island, and the night is one of the busiest of the year for visitors.
Where to watch
- The seafront and the marina: right in front of the show, and the most crowded. Arrive well before midnight.
- The hills above the city: you see the full ring of fireworks around the bay, with fewer people.
- From a boat: cruise ships usually anchor in the bay for the night, and some local operators run trips.
Good to know
- Roads in the centre close in the evening and traffic is heavy. Plan to walk, or check the special bus timetable.
- Book restaurants with a view early, as they fill up weeks ahead.
