Noite do Mercado

On 23 December Funchal celebrates the Noite do Mercado, the Market Night. The Mercado dos Lavradores, the city’s farmers’ market, is where families come for flowers, fruit and the last things for Christmas dinner, and in the evening the streets around it turn into one big party.

Expect crowds, music, poncha stalls and people of every age catching up with friends. It is the most local night of the Christmas season, and many Madeirans would not miss it.

Good to know

• The old town and the area around the market are very busy from the evening onwards.
• Come on foot or by bus. Parking near the market is very hard to find that night.
