The Missas do Parto, the “childbirth masses”, are nine masses held at dawn in the days before Christmas. They are one of the most loved traditions on the island and among the oldest.
What makes them special is what happens after the mass. People stay outside the church in the dark, sharing hot drinks, liqueurs and Christmas snacks, and singing traditional carols. Many parishes hold a small party, and it is common to see whole families there before work.
How to go
- Masses usually start around 6:00. Times and the exact dates vary by parish, so check the notice on the church door or the parish page.
- Everyone is welcome, including visitors. Dress warmly, because mornings can be cool.
- Funchal’s churches draw the biggest crowds. Village parishes feel more personal.
The official events guide lists the 2026 masses in Câmara de Lobos, Funchal, Machico, Ribeira Brava, Santana and São Vicente. Read more about the season in our Christmas in Madeira guide.
