At the end of summer Madeira celebrates the grape harvest. The Wine Festival, the Festa do Vinho, brings tastings, music and folklore to Funchal, and in the vineyards of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos you can see, and sometimes join, the traditional harvest.

In Estreito de Câmara de Lobos
High above Câmara de Lobos, the village of Estreito is surrounded by terraced vineyards. During the festival there is a recreation of the traditional harvest: picking grapes, carrying them in baskets on the head, and treading them with bare feet in a wooden press, accompanied by folk music. Stalls sell food, wine and the new must.
In Funchal
The city centre hosts wine stands, tastings, concerts and folk dancing, with the island’s producers showing their wines.
Join the harvest
Some producers and tour operators offer harvest experiences in late August and September: you pick grapes, tread them and have lunch with the families. They sell out, so book early.
