Madeira with kids

Madeira with a baby or toddler

Travelling to Madeira with a baby or toddler: flights, getting around steep streets, strollers versus carriers, baby supplies, where to stay, pools and beaches, and health care.

The mild climate makes Madeira one of the easiest winter-sun trips with a baby.

Madeira is a relaxed, safe and child-friendly place, and the mild climate means no extreme heat or cold on the coast. A little planning around the hills makes it easy with a baby or toddler.

Getting there

Flights from most of Europe take four hours or less. In winter, flights can be delayed by wind, so pack extra nappies, food and a change of clothes in your hand luggage. See airport wind.

Stroller or carrier?

Funchal is built on steep hills, and many pavements are narrow or cobbled. A light, foldable stroller works on the flat seafront promenades and in malls; a baby carrier is better for the old town, viewpoints and walks. Many families bring both.

Getting around

A hire car with a booked child seat gives the most freedom. Taxis can provide child seats if you ask in advance. On steep roads, give yourself time and stop often; mountain roads can make little ones car-sick.

Where to stay

Stay low down and close to the sea, with easy access: the Lido area of Funchal, Caniço, Calheta or Machico. A holiday apartment with a kitchen, washing machine and a cot is ideal; ask for a cot and high chair when you book.

Baby supplies

Pharmacies and supermarkets sell nappies, formula, baby food and toiletries, including well-known brands. Pharmacists give good advice, and there is always a pharmacy on duty at night in each area.

Pools and beaches

  • Calheta and Machico have sandy beaches with calm water.
  • Lidos in Funchal and Caniço have shallow areas and lifeguards in summer.
  • The sea is cool in winter; heated pools at some hotels help.

Health

Medical care is good. The main public hospital is in Funchal, and every municipality has a health centre. Carry your EHIC or insurance details. See healthcare.

Activities that work with a baby

  • Seafront walks and gardens in Funchal
  • The cable car to Monte
  • Short, flat levada walks such as Balcões with a carrier
  • Catamaran dolphin trips on calm days
  • Café life: Madeirans love babies, and you will be made welcome everywhere
