Madeira Flower Festival 2027: parade dates and what to see

Madeira’s Flower Festival 2027: dates, the Great Allegoric Flower Parade, the Wall of Hope, flower carpets and exhibitions in Funchal, and tips for seeing the parade.

The Flower Festival 2027 runs from 29 April to 30 May, with parades on 2 and 16 May.

Every spring Funchal celebrates the flowers that grow so well on the island. The Flower Festival, the Festa da Flor, decorates the city with blooms for a month and brings one of the most beautiful parades of the year.

Dates for 2027

  • Festival period: 29 April to 30 May 2027
  • Great Allegoric Flower Parade: Sundays 2 and 16 May 2027, in central Funchal

Each year the detailed programme is published in the spring. We add the events to the calendar as they are confirmed.

The Wall of Hope

On the opening weekend, thousands of children gather in the main square, the Praça do Município, each carrying a flower. One by one they place them on a large wall, building the Muro da Esperança, the Wall of Hope, as a symbol of peace. It is one of the most moving moments of the festival.

The Flower Parade

Floats covered in thousands of flowers move slowly through the centre, with dancers in flower costumes, music and groups from across the island. Each year has a theme.

Around the city

  • Flower carpets on the streets of the centre
  • Flower exhibitions and stands in the Avenida Arriaga and the Municipal Garden
  • Decorated shop windows and squares

Where to watch the parade

The parade route runs along the seafront and the main avenues. Arrive early for a spot at the front, or buy seats in the stands. The parade is in the afternoon; bring water and sun protection.

Tips

  • May is popular. Book accommodation early for the parade weekends.
  • The weather is usually lovely, around 22 °C. See Madeira in May.
  • Combine the festival with garden visits; see Funchal’s gardens.
