Easy levada walks in Madeira, for families and first-timers
The gentlest levada walks in Madeira: short, mostly flat routes with big views or waterfalls, suitable for children, older walkers and anyone new to hiking.
You don’t need to be a mountaineer to enjoy Madeira’s levadas. These walks are short and mostly flat, with a real reward at the end. Classified trails need a booking and a fee; see trail fees and booking.
Levada dos Balcões (PR11)

Levada do Risco (PR6.1)
About 3 km return from the Rabaçal forest house to a viewpoint facing a 100-metre waterfall. Add the walk or shuttle down from the car park. Read more.
Levada do Rei (PR18)
A gentle path through laurel forest above São Jorge on the north coast, ending at a stream and a small waterfall at Ribeiro Bonito. Around 10 km return, almost level, so it is easy but long; you can turn back whenever you like.
Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo (PR1.2)
Not flat, but a steady, well-built path to the highest point of Madeira in about an hour each way. A great family summit on a clear day. Read more.
Levada dos Tornos sections, above Funchal
The Levada dos Tornos runs along the hills above Funchal and Camacha. Short sections near Monte and Camacha are easy walks with views over the city, and some pass tea houses and gardens. Not all sections are classified trails; follow local signs.
Tips for walking with children
- Pick walks with a clear goal: a waterfall, a viewpoint, birds.
- Hold small children’s hands on narrow sections next to drops.
- Bring snacks and water; there are rarely cafés along the way.
- Avoid wet days, when paths are slippery.
- Children under 12 don’t pay the trail fee but must be added to the booking.
