Adventure in Madeira: canyoning, paragliding, coasteering and more

Madeira beyond walking: canyoning in the mountain streams, tandem paragliding over the south-west coast, coasteering, kayaking, jeep tours, mountain biking and trail running.

Always book adventure activities with licensed, insured operators.

Madeira’s steep valleys, waterfalls and sea cliffs make it a natural playground for outdoor sports. Here is what you can do, and what to know before you book.

Canyoning

Descending mountain streams by abseiling down waterfalls, sliding over rocks and jumping into pools. Madeira is one of Europe’s best canyoning destinations, with routes for beginners and experts, mostly in the laurel forest. Season: all year, depending on water levels; trips are cancelled after heavy rain. Go with a certified guide; never attempt canyons alone.

Paragliding

Tandem flights launch from the hills above Arco da Calheta and land on the beach at Madalena do Mar or Calheta, with views of the cliffs and the sea. Flights depend on the wind and are often in the afternoon.

Coasteering and cliff jumping

Swimming, scrambling and jumping along the rocky coast with a guide, usually in summer on the south coast.

Kayaking and stand-up paddle

Kayak trips along the cliffs of the Garajau marine reserve and around Machico and Caniçal, sometimes with dolphins nearby. Calm mornings are best.

Diving and snorkelling

Jeep tours

Half-day and full-day tours by four-wheel drive take you on mountain roads and forest tracks to viewpoints and villages. A good option without a car.

Mountain biking

Enduro and downhill trails run from the Paul da Serra plateau and the mountains down to the sea, with shuttle services. Book with a local operator that knows which trails are open and legal.

Trail running

Madeira’s mountains host one of Europe’s best-known ultra-trail races in late spring. Many walking trails are also run, but remember that classified trails need a booking. See trail fees.

Safety

  • Use licensed operators with insurance and certified guides.
  • Check what is included: transport, equipment, photos and insurance.
  • Respect cancellations for weather; mountain streams rise fast after rain.
